Controversial US gay bishop heads to Reddish

Controversial US gay bishop heads to Reddish
Stockport Express, UK OPENLY gay American clergyman Gene Robinson will visit Stockport for an event celebrating sexual diversity in the Church of England.

The controversial Bishop of New Hampshire will speak at St Elisabeth’s Church, Bedford Street, Reddish, on November 6 immediately after a ticket-only service.

Changing Attitude - a group of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender members of the Anglican Church - has organised the event to commemorate its 10th anniversary.

St Elisabeth’s has been chosen as venue for the north of England with another service taking place at St Martin-in-the-Fields, London, for the south.

The Rev Nigel Hawley, vicar of St Elisabeth’s, said: “I am very proud we have agreed to welcome Gene Robinson to Reddish.

“It is a marvellous tribute to us that we have been chosen over all the churches in the north of England and says a lot for the inclusive, welcoming nature of the congregation here.”

Father-of-two Canon Robinson, 58, who was once married but has lived with partner Mark Andrew for more than 10 years, caused a split in the Anglican Church when he was consecrated in 2003.

His life has been denounced as an abomination of the Bible’s teaching by opponents. But supporters hold him up as an excellent example of Christianity.

Next month’s service features the Rt Rev Stephen Lowe, Bishop of Hulme, and other senior figures.

Tickets are free but must be booked by calling Changing Attitude on 020 7738 1305.

St Elisabeth’s will be holding its own service as normal that morning.
